Pumpkin Scones and the Truth About Pumpkin Spice

I don't understand why people are obsessed with pumpkin spice. Seriously!  The first autumn-like day in August, BAM!, pumpkin spice everything on the Facebook feed.

Pumpkin (pie) spice is a mix of mostly cinnamon with cloves, nutmeg, ginger, and maybe some allspice or mace. Remove the ginger part and you get apple pie spice.

It's a cocktail of spices that you can mix year-round and use without the pumpkin.

Speaking of which, I had leftover pumpkin puree from the pumpkin muffins last week so I made pumpkin scones. The recipe is everywhere and they all seem to stem from the same copycat of the Starbucks pumpkin scone recipe (that people are probably pairing with their pumpkin flavored hot milk).

I didn't make the glaze. The scones taste fine with a little butter and honey or some apple butter.
